The BV523 comes with or without a colour display, without the colour display the connector can be used for extra I/O. For the information about the I/O see the data sheet. The device has a built in USB interface that uses the FTDI virtual COM port. This chip is chosen because of its widespread use. It is built into Linux and has drivers for most of the popular operating systems.

The BV523 is equipped with a battery backed RTC, at first switch on the RTC will report as if it is not there, the time and date needs to be set before it can be recognised. When using the BFF file make sure that the 'Translate to binary font' is checked, this will convert the font into a suitable format before sending it down the com port.

==Touch Screen==
The screen has fitted a resistive touch panel that can be accessed via BV-Basic, however it does need calibrating before use and the calibration values need storing and recalling each reset. The automated technique for doing this is as follows.

Issue the command tucalibrate and you will be presented with a calibration screen. Touch the two dots as requested and this is the first part done. The more accurately you touch the dots the better the result. '''NOTE:''' all this does is to calculate the calibration values, it does not set them, this has to be done using the 'tusetcal' before the screen can be used. 

'''2) Get the calibration values''' 
Issue the command tugetcal and this will give you four numbers, two integer numbers and two floating point numbers, these are the calibration values for that particular screen.

'''3) Save the calibration''' 
Create a function called screen and in it place the values you got as part of the tusetcal command thus:

The last line of the above will set the calibration the other lines are just to give some messages, you can put anything you like in the screen function. If an SD Card is used save the file and call it "screen.bas" the file name and the function name is important, if no SD Card is available then save it to flash, assuming just the screen function is in ram then:
fsave ram to 0
should do. 

The function name screen is special in that it will be found at start up and run (just like auto). The purpose is to enable the calibration to be loaded but also have a custom start up screen.

==Power Control==
The BV523 has a unique power control that uses the alarm from the Real Time Clock (RTC). The operation is as follows:
# The alarm is set to go off at some point in the future
# The BV523 is powered off using the 'poff' command

To use this feature the date and time must be set and the battery for the RTC must be in place. This example will wake the processor up at a set time.

Set the alarm for some time in the future, in this case a couple of minutes. When setting the alarm a day and month is also required. Set the alarm on and then use poff which will trun off the BV523

The BV523 will power up when for following happens:
# The alarm goes off at the set time
# A reset occurs on the reset pin
# A power cycle reset - removing the power and applying again
Other considerations
# At any time the BV523 is off simply reset to get it back on again
# There is an area of RAM that is set by 'poff' to inform the Application Loader not to reset the device, this will be lost when the power is removed and so 'next time' the device will come on.
# If it does not work as expected check that the clock is running by using print time$() twice. Aslo chack that the date is set correctly and don't forget to use 'alon'.
# It is possible to repeat the alarm every so often, for an example of this see [[BV-Basic_Date_and_Time#Power_control| Date and time Example]]

==Updates==
To download an updated BV-Basic use the Boot loader dialog. It will accept HEX or BIN files and can automatically detect the boot loader that is installed on the device so this boot loader should work with all BV5xx devices. Simply select the file name and send.

==Description==
This is a small development board that uses a PIC32MX340-512. The board comes complete with PIC32-Basic firmware that can read and write FAT16 and FAT32 files. The main communication and programming is via the serial connector.

It also has a built in boot loader so that C programs can be written using MPLAB (Microchip) and programmed without the need for a PIC programmer. See the resources files for details.

This is a cut down version of the BV513 and so is ideal for building into user applications. An SD Card and USB can be fitted via products BV410 and BV101. These is also a kit version that comes with these two extra boards and connectors.
